Origin:
Hardwood forests of the eastern and central U.S., especially common in the forests of Indiana

Color and Characteristics:
The coloring tends toward violet-brown. There is a distinct difference in color between the nearly white sapwood of walnut and the heartwood, which ranges in color from a deep, rich dark, almost chocolate brown to a purplish black. The wood often has a purplish cast with dark streaks. The grain of walnut is mostly straight and open, though some boards may have a grain pattern that is burled or curly. Fine, flowery pattern or also a striped texture. Its peculiar texture gives walnut a very elegant, sleek look. Highest quality, suffused with history. Extravagant, unusual and yet familiar.

Application:
Its exclusive veneer is traditionally considered well-suited to design: from Baroque and Rococo times to today used as a notably high-quality decorative wood in the furniture industry. It is typically found in wood flooring, veneer, paneling, fixtures, furniture, cabinets, and novelty items. In addition, it is superior to all other woods for gunstocks because of the way it keeps its shape.
